Brazil`s Lula claims Biden stated ‘Russia should be destroyed’
(MENAFN) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva revealed in an interview with Le Monde that former US President Joe Biden expressed a desire to see Russia “destroyed” during his tenure. Lula, who has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, also criticized efforts to blame Moscow alone for the war, stating that Western countries share some responsibility.
Lula said, “Joe Biden, with whom I spoke at length, thought Russia needed to be destroyed,” though he did not specify when the conversation occurred. He expressed concern over Europe’s shift toward aligning with Washington and investing billions in rearmament, warning that an obsession with war will prevent peace.
Moscow has long framed the Ukraine war as a proxy conflict driven by the West, condemning arms shipments to Kyiv as hindrances to peace. US officials have acknowledged this perspective, with former Trump envoy Keith Kellogg agreeing “in a way,” and Senator Marco Rubio calling it a proxy war between nuclear powers, the US and Russia.
Donald Trump has criticized Biden’s extensive funding for Ukraine, arguing that the conflict should have remained a European issue. Trump has also claimed—though acknowledged it was exaggerated—that only he could stop World War III and end the conflict quickly. His mediation efforts have faced opposition from European NATO allies who support continued military aid to Ukraine.
Following Trump’s pressure, Ukraine recently resumed direct talks with Russia after a hiatus since 2022. The negotiations in Istanbul have resulted in a prisoner exchange and draft memorandums toward a peace roadmap.
Washington’s top diplomat in Turkey suggested on Tuesday that Trump is losing patience over the Ukraine war. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov cautioned that expecting quick breakthroughs in peace talks would be unrealistic.
